Call The Pirate's Lair @ 540-659-6209

Important Note: All of the navigation lights offered here at The Pirate's Lair have been scrubbed clean and free of all accumulated black soot, any oil or kerosene residue, sea salt, grease and grime, and loose oxidation! Unless otherwise noted each nautical lantern, navigation light, or signal lamp have all been tested with a colorless and odorless lamp oil of which there may be remnants found in the oil reservoir and wick. There is nothing worse than getting years of accumulated black soot from burnt kerosene, or ships grease and grime on a wall or flooring. The ships lights and navigation lights which you purchase from The Pirate's Lair will be ready for your use and display as there will be no need for you to first get any special industrial cleansers or degreasers to remove any of the aforementioned issues.

collection of ships navigation lights

The Pirate's Lair has the single Largest Collection of Naval Vessels and Ships Lights, Antique Nautical Lights, and Ships Navigation Lights on the Internet. Clear 360 degree Masthead Lights and Anchor Lights, Red Port Lights, Green or Blue Starboard Lights, Running lights, Ship and Boat Signal Lights for River and Blue Water Vessels.

port starboard running navigation lights as office bookends The navigation lights which we find and select to offer are typically between 50 and 125 years old, salt encrusted with smoke and oil residue from use. Most of them are fully functional with their original single or dual oil burners, while some have been electrified for use on 110/115 vac electrical circuits found in a home. For the most part, the antique navigation lights we offer have all been hand made and handcrafted which can easily be seen from the detailed craftsmanship which each possess. Many of them are made completely of copper and brass so as to provide for years and years of sea duty and not to easily rust when being used aboard a ship.

These antique navigation lights were produced the world over and used by all types of vessels. From the largest 4 masted sailing ships and steamers plying the oceans (or blue-water vessels), to the smallest of harbor taxis and tug boats. Every vessel on the water needed to have navigation lights both by law and self-preservation.

The smaller 8" to 12" high navigation lights can make great bookends or just sitting on a desk or shelf as an accent piece in a nautical office! Because each navigation light is so unique and individual they don't even have to match, and even look better when they don't!

All of the lights offered by The Pirate's Lair have seen decades and decades of use and have developed that sought after patina and quality that only age and harsh conditions can offer. All of our offerings are the real deal, we do not offer reproductions or fakes.

large matching blue water ocean going port starboard all copper navigation lights dining room These navigation lights come in various styles and functions: the 360 degree clear lens are typically your anchor and masthead lights. The 18th and early 19th century navigation lights are beautiful works of art and they were typically individually handcrafted. As an accent piece nothing can give a room more of a nautical look than an intricately designed navigation light!

(here are two matching huge double wick port and starboard lights by Metal Industries of Canada. They look fantastic in this nautical dining room setting)

Your red ones are port lights for the left side of the ship and your blue or green ones are starboard lights for the right side of the ship.

These port and starboard lights are also called running lights. There are some lights which combine red and green in the same light and these are known as bow lights. There are also other lights such as "emergency" lights which are typically red but have a 360 degree illumination. Others are stern lights and "not under command" lights.

But no matter what color or function all of these navigation lights have a unique and distinct character about them, and are the perfect home decor accent pieces or can even be used in the event of emergency powre outages.

They look great just sitting on a table or shelf. Can be used as bookends. Or with chain hanging up in a corner. These navigation lights are so unique and individualistic you can 2 or more in the same room without overdoing it.

They are the perfect accent for that nautical look and feel, especially for a beach house or water estate. Every sailor or nautical-minded person would love to have one of these oil burning navigation lights in their home or office as they are a nice reminder of days gone by.

brass and glass light that has been electrified tung woo port light eli griffiths ships anchor light
Photo to the left illustrates an electrified ships "Anchor light" which originally had a two wick oil burner. Made of Brass and Copper.
Dimensions: 15" high x 9" wide, weighing 14 lbs.

Middle photo shows a red port running light produced by the well known Tung Woo Light and Lantern Company of Hong Kong. For decades the Hong Kong Port Authority required that all vessels entering into Hong Kong Harbor and its Territorial Waters were required to have oil burning running lights as backups to their electrical navigation lights. A ship was not allowed to enter into Hong Kong without having these oil burning lights. Well, in the likely event that they needed these lights just for the purpose of entering into Hong Kong Harbor it could be easily arranged by the Hong Kong Authorities for the captain of the vessel to get them from Tung Woo! Yes, a form of commercial extortion by the Hong Kong Government to keep one of their long-time favorites in business. Tung Woo went out of business in the 1980's.

Dimensions: 9" high x 5" wide, weighing less than a pound.

Photo to the right shows a mast head or possibly an anchor light with a maker tag by Eli Griffiths & Son, of Birmingham, England and dated 1915. This is definitely a "blue water" ships light as the oil burner has two separate large 1" wicks for illumination in perfect working order. This ships light is huge and heavy with an absolutely beautiful aged patina to the brass and copper hardware and tin body with most of the original very dark green paint intact. Stunning 95 year old piece!
Dimensions: 17" high w/o securing hoops extended, 27" w/ securing hoops extended, x 9" wide, weighing 14 lbs.

GP Ltd, England WWII dated 1944
Photo to the left shows a large double wick oil burning "blue water" naval ships navigation light by GP, Ltd and dated 1944.

It very unique and has both the port (left, red) and starboard (right, green or blue) split lenses within the same light!

This type of blue-water naval ships lamp is typically put up on the bridge, up on a mast, or somewhere in the middle of the ship facing forward to the bow. In this manner one navigational light is used to give the ships port and starboard position to other ships.

This is a "before" photograpn and shows the light having not been cleaned with some very slight surface rust. It is made of a galvanized tin body to protect it from the salt water and elements, along with remanants of a light navy gray painted surface, brass burner and brass hanging handle.

This navigation light was certainly used during WWII aboard either a British naval ship or merchantman.

Dimensions: 12" high x 9" wide, weighing 10 lbs.

Please Read. First, these are the real deal vintage and antique navigation lights used aboard commercial merchant vessels and naval ships, with most dating between 50 and 110 years old well before even the most rudimentary safety standards were in place. Most of these navigation lights, lamps, and lanterns are kerosene oil burners and some have been retro-fitted and electrified to use a standard 60W, 110V 15amp household light. As with any antique or vintage item there is no warranty as to safety or workmanship meeting contemporary standards. As is our standard procedure, this navigation light has been tested and found to be functional. Odorless testing oil has been drained from the oil reservoir after testing but small amounts may still be present which could present a fire hazard. The oil burner will be shipped with wick already placed within the oil burner. Any electrification or modifications done to this item will not be in accordance with any UL testing or adherence and may present an electrical hazard. The item is being sold "as is" and may require re-wiring or electrical inspection by a qualified electrician at the purchasers expense and liability. Caution must be taken when operating any of these oil burning lights due to the inherent fire hazard of the flammable liquid and potential spills. Note that this naval or nautical navigation light was originally meant to be used with a flammable liquid (kerosene) and regularly maintained aboard a ship at sea on a daily basis by sailors familiar with this type of equipment. It is considered to be antique and its actual use as designed in a contemporary home environment presents a potential electrical or fire hazard which The Pirate's Lair cannot be made responsible. By purchasing this item the purchaser accepts full responsibility and liability of the operation and maintenance of this navigation light.

The Pirate's Lair Exclusive!
We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value.

However the truth of the matter is that the majority of these trunks were made towards the middle to end of the 19th century just at the dawning of the industrial revolution here in America when there were no child labor laws or protections. This rare photo clearly illustrates at least 3 generations of owners and workers, ages appearing to range from pre-teen/adolescent, teens/early adult, through middle to old age!
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown.

Note the adolescent factory workers on top row! Note that there are no women in the photo! This is due to the fact that at that time "proper" women did not work outside of the home, certainly not in a factory. Everybody appears to look pretty stern, having on their arms crossed and "work" faces put on.
