This trunk is heavy and constructed of extra thick pine boards, extra wide oak slats, and all heavy duty cast iron hardware, and four wheels for easy moving. Each and every capped nail head and all cast iron hardware was hand polished! Stained a rich mahogany and then five coats of protective spar varnish was applied to all surfaces. Of special note are the "swirl impressions" seen on the bottom planks of this trunk which were left by the blade of the saw used when first cutting this plank (the rough cut) at the saw mill. From the circumference of the impressions one can easily tell how huge this saw blade must have been! This trunk will be a focal point and conversation piece in any room it is placed. The interior paper covering below the liftout trays was removed to reveal the beautiful 120+ year old cured pine wood! The grit, laqueur and black japanning was carefully removed from the exterior oak wood slats, then scrubbed, and lightly sanded to reveal the beautiful oak wood grain. In over 9 years restoring trunks we have never had another one as well preserved in original condition as this one! We think this trunk was purchased back in the 1870's or 1880's and then put into a dry attic for over 130 years until re-discovered! Everything on this trunk is original. The black japanning used on all metal parts is in a perfect original state and is georgeous. We just lightly sanded the edges of the top lid oak strap clamps to give some contrast and it came out beautiful. All of the oak straps have the light goldish-yellow tone from the original shellac finish put on over a century ago! The pressed tin filigree floral design covering the exterior body is in perfect original condition with absolute zero oxidation to the original gold and black paint - Stunning is the only word! The leather handles are original! Unique front flip lock latches with dated hardware of July 9 1872 Opening the trunk lid shows the absolutely brilliant, sharp and clear, beautiful original Victorian Lithographs on the inside lid and top door covering of the liftout tray! Magnificent with no color loss whatsoever! Most remarkable was the well preserved thin paper lining found on the inside of the trunk and liftout tray which normally in most if not all cases has been so badly aged or stained by moisture it needs to be removed. Stunningly beautiful is the only way to describe this trunk. Working Lock but no Key. The Victorian Lithographs and designs on the inside lid and top of the liftout tray were treated with a special sealer to preserve the original integrity of the colors. The entire interior and exterior of the trunk was then applied with spar varnish to both seal and preserve both the wood, metal, cardboard sections and paper. |

This fantastic all wood 110-120 Year Old Antique Trunk had an exterior covering of green painted canvas and an interior thin paper covering, both were removed during restoration. Once the coverings were removed they revealed the beautiful 130+ year old cured pine and oak wood! All exterior and interior oak wood slats and pine body were scrubbed, dried, and lightly sanded to reveal the full beauty of the grain and character of the trunk. All the black japanning was carefully removed and hardware polished. Some time in the distant past a U and Hasp replaced the original lock, this was professionally done and just awaits an antique padlock! New front leather handles were installed using the original end caps. |

This fantastic all wood 120-130 Year Old Antique Trunk was a high end constructed trunk which had an exterior of hand tooled leather (removed during restoration) and used the thickest of pine boards, oak wood slats, a brass working lock (no key) and heavy duty hardware both of which have stamped patent dates ranging from 1867 to 1879. The exterior leather and interior paper coverings were removed to reveal the beautiful 130+ year old cured pine and oak wood! The laqueur and black japanning was removed from the exterior oak wood slats, scrubbed and lightly sanded to reveal the beautiful grain. All the black japanning was carefully removed and hardware polished revealing the patent dates and leaving a beautiful though ruggedly handsome silvery finish. The pine wood body and oak slats were done in a mahogany finish. Working Lock but no key.
