US Navy Crystal Decanter Great White Fleet and WWI Era with USN insignia and inscription comparison 36oz 24oz 12oz

Above are the 3 standard regulation size (12oz 24oz and 36oz) US Navy Lead Cut Crystal Decanters 1890-1910 SpanAm War, Great White Fleet Era! These decanters have the Eagle Clutching Anchor which was the very first authorized US Navy Seal ca 1892 and the forerunner of todays Department of Navy Sale

us navy enamelware enlisted cup and plate ca 1898-1910 us navy enamelware enlisted cup and plate ca 1898-1910

The above enlisted seamans mess plate and cup were used by the US Navy possibly from the late 1880's up until WWI. This cup and plate are attached and presumably hung up on a wall honoring the unidentified sailor whose photo is glued to the bottom of the cup. There is a matching bowl to this set which was standard messware for all meals. It is assumed that this was his mess gear and a family member, possibly his mother, put this together to remember him.

While the sailor himself will remain unidentified, by using a powerful magnifying glass we were able to discern the name of his ship which was stenciled onto his hat ribbon! The USS Buffalo!

Click HERE for a more in depth review of the above US Navy Enlisted Enamelware used between the 1890's to early 1900's

Did we ever fail to mention that the best part of this job is hearing the many naval tales and sea stories from our clients as well as doing all of the research into the items we find, and then freely providing this to all interested parties!

RARE!!! Civil War US Navy Soap Box or Shaving Kit. Inscribed, "Don't Give Up The Ship"
As Described and Depicted in the "Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia" by Francis Lord. Issued to and Used by Sailors Aboard US Navy Federal Ships During The Civil War. As typical, the mirror on the inside top cover lid of the shaving soap box has been lost. The metal eye ring used to hang the top inside cover for easy viewing is still intact. Gutta Percha is a hard plastic latex-like substance derived from a SE Asian tree of the same name. First patented by Goodyear in 1851 and licensed to 100's of other companies for use in electrical insulation, containers such as cups and bowls to hold liquid, and is still used today in dentistry.

Nautical Porcelain Antique Pitcher 1880s-1900s
9.75" high with two raised fouled anchors on each side and made to look like the prow or bow of a late 19th or very early 20th century armored cruiser - SpanAm War and Great White Fleet Era (pre-WWI) - Perfect Museum Quality Condition with a beautiful voerall brown with dark golden highlighting. The front and back (fore and aft on a ship) of the pitcher displays a shell pattern as found on many late 19th and early 20th century armored cruisers which represented waves or water being parted.

- Perfect Gift for anyone who enjoys and appreciates a nautical motif. All in all a fantastic piece without any chips or cracks with some slight crazing as to be expected of a porcelain piece over 100 years old, yet it is fully functional and usable!

navy antique porcelain pitcher
CLICK PHOTO!

This pitcher was found as part of a small naval collection of dinnerware with the pieces dated from the 1890s to early 1900s. This fantastic pitcher was certainly non-regulation and most likely a private purchase by some sailor used aboard ship in either an enlisted or most likely small officers mess. Two unique feature of this pitcher is the area on the top of the handle for the thumb which indicates that this was not just a display piece; and on the inside bottom is a triangular piece of fired and glazed clay which was used to help prevent liquid from splashing back up the side of the pitcher when being filled!

Why have a handsome home or business executive office with "hum-drum ugly utilitarian steel file cabinets" when you can be outfitted with these antique 150 year old Captains Sea Chests (Domed Sea Chests and Pirate Chests), as wonderful nautical home furnishing! For that matter why settle for a nice and probably very expensive yet run-of-the-mill typical office desk when you can now have a true Captain's Desk befitting a Ship's Master and Commander. What a conversation piece either at work or at home. Our nautical themed antique hope chests, china chests and silverware chests are the perfect complement to store your U.S. Navy Tableware and Dinnerware!

The nautical furniture offered at The Pirate's Lair is by far the most unique and distinctive you will find anywhere on or off the net. Our nautical home furnishings offer more than just a nautical decor, but a slice of our Maritime History, a sense of romance and global travel, as well as honoring the ships and sailors of days gone by and the dangers they faced sailing the high seas in time of war.

Here we have two 6' Wooden Hatch Cover "Nautical Coffee Tables" from re-stored WW2 Liberty Ship Cargo Hold Hatch Covers - a great nautical gift for that special sailor - heavy, naturally distressed wood grain from years of sea service! These nautical tables are rough, tough, with lots of character! They withstood many years at sea in the roughest of weather. There is nothing "gentle" about a 60 year old WW2 Hatch Cover! They are much like our beloved U.S. Navy seaman. So if it's a unique, authentic, and distinctive Nautical Home Decor you are seeking, then The Pirate's Lair is the place for you!

wooden hatch cover coffee table You won't find a more durable piece of antique nautical furniture to be had! It's not going to be knocked over or broken, it will withstand being played on, jumped and spilled on! And any scratch can easily be remedied thereby just giving your nautical table that much more character. Finally a piece of fine furniture that parents won't have to worry about the kids ruining it!

Each of these WW2 Victory Ship and Liberty Ship Hatch Covers are made of thick pine planks measuring 60"L x 29"W x 2.5"D weighing in at 80lbs before re-fitting them with a trestle. Each Hatch Cover is the same in design, yet unique and individualistic in character based upon the years it saw at sea, not too unlike a true sailor!

Note the beautiful grain of the wood and how the recessed handle is fitted over the scooped-out part of the plank. Perfect for spare change, stamps or other small items.

Above in detail is an all wood Nautical Domed Sea Chest with the lid open showing how the chest was refinished so as to hang file folders and store office desk accessories. That distinctive "Pirates of the Caribbean" decor and theme, but no movie reproductions here, only the real thing!

Note the beautiful brown patina that only 130 year old wood can achieve. Truly a work of art, one can only imagine how and where this Captains Sea Chest was used over the years, and who owned it. Now one can be yours, a legacy to be handed down from generation to generation!

To the very right is a close up of a Sea Chest, China Chest or Pirate Chest with green and black metal cladding with oak wood straps. Each and every Sea Chest is unique and no two are the same, probably similar to the journeys that they each have taken over a century and a half of use.
