The Pirate's Lair offers expert information on and is the world's largest single source for antique Antique Steamer Trunks and Antique Trunks in general. All Antique Steamer Trunks have been carefully restored and refinished using the same craftsmanship, technique and tools that were used during their original production. These Antique Steamer Trunks and Steamer Chests would make the perfect compliment to any home decor as antique coffee tables, storing military uniforms and military memorabilia, unique family room storage cabinets for videos, CD's, or games, or for your traditional antique hope chest!

Note the two restored Antique Steamer Trunks (both are Dome Top, Hump Back or Camel Back models) in the photos above each 100 to 150 years old, they are being used as office filing cabinets as they have hanging file folders in them and the lift out trays have all of the staplers, tape dispensors, pens, paper and other items normally used in an office!| Custom Designed, Handcrafted, and Hand Lettered in Caligraphy on your Antique Chest |

We all romanticize about the mystique of these antique trunks. The possible owners and travels that each steamer trunk has taken, along with the high level of detailed craftsmanship in the original production of each and every steamer trunk with that individualized character giving both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value. |
It was a common practice that loyal and productive craftsmen would be allowed to bring their children to work with them to learn a craft, so many of the children in this photograph were more than likely sons of the men shown. |

| This Antique Trunk is One of the MOST Well Built Heavy-duty Yet Handsome Trunks We've Restored. The original trunk maker "Crouch & Fitzgerald" who had 4 locations in New York City took great pride in their trunks as seen in their craftsmanship, upgraded materials used, "C & F NY" maker marks on the casted iron hardware, and maker labels. Originally covered in a thick canvas and high-end inside paper covering both of which were removed, wood scrubbed, lightly sanded, with a light honey stain applied to the pine body and darker stain on the oak straps. The Hardware was very lightly sanded where needed, black japanning carefully removed on the nail heads and the "C & F" and "NY" monograms for contrast highlighting, and then two coats of spar varnish were applied inside and out. The male half of the lock was taken off years ago, but we were able to remove the grit and japanning which revealed the brass. We were also able to save the Original Leather Document Pouch and Maker Label on inside lid. Saved and reinstalled the Original "C & F NY" Monogrammed End Caps and with new thick leather handles. New, handcrafted large lift out tray was made. |

An exceptionally well-made and heavy antique trunk yet not losing its elegance. Just too many high-end craftsmanship details to mention such as load bearing nails/rivets having brass-coated washers to significantly increase the sturdiness, upgraded extra thick pine planks without knots, specially made lid stay to ensure keeping the lid open, heavy duty cast iron "C & F" and "NY" monogrammed hardware throughout. This trunk is VERY heavy for its size due to the upgraded and thicker than usual pine planking, casted iron and steel hardware used in the original manufacturing. |

| RARE AND ONE-OF-A-KIND FOR THE ANTIQUE TRADITIONALIST OR PROFESSIONAL HOUSE RESTORER! In over 7 years restoring trunks we have never had another one as well preserved in original condition as this one! We think this trunk was purchased back in the 1870's or 1880's and then put into a dry attic for over 130 years until re-discovered! Everything on this trunk is original with absolute minimal repair just to the liftout tray lid. The black japanning used on all metal parts is in a perfect original state and is georgeous. We just lightly sanded the edges of the top lid oak strap clamps to give some contrast and it came out beautiful. All of the oak straps have the light goldish-yellow tone with original shellac'd finish! The tin filigreed floral design covering the body is in perfect original condition with absolute zero oxidation to the original gold and black paint - Stunning is the only word! The leather handles are original! Unique front flip lock latches with dated hardware of July 9 1872 finishes Opening the trunk lid shows the absolutely brilliant and beautiful original victorian lithographs on the inside lid and top door covering of the liftout tray! Magnificent with no color loss! Most remarkable was the well preserved thin paper lining found on the inside of the trunk and liftout tray which in most if not all cases has been so badly stained by moisture and time it needs to be removed. But we were able to seal and save all of this inside paper which has a dark goldish yellow color with darker gold 6 pointed stars as the design! |
Click Photo! |
Beautifully Stunning is the only way to describe this trunk. Working Lock but no Key. The victorian lithographs and designs on the inside lid and top of the liftout tray were treated with a special sealer to preserve the original integrity of the colors. The entire interior and exterior of the trunk was then applied with spar varnish to both seal and preserve both the wood, metal, cardboard sections and paper. |

| Absolutely PERFECT for a coffee table with LOTs of character! Large, sturdy, well built with lots of heavy duty hardware. Exterior was originally covered in canvas and the interior covered in paper both of which was removed, revealing wood scrubbed and sanded to a beautiful natural patina. The hardware, square nails, and tin body sections were lightly sanded and then restored in a contrasting black and brass finish. Original leather straps and handles were far too detiorated to save and were also removed. Both exterior and interior then given a light application of varnish, new leather straps and leather handles were installed. Working Lock AND Key!!! |

| Restored green and gold pressed tin metal and wood antique trunk with handcrafted lift out tray. This trunk was originally restored decades and decades ago and the previous restorers used a dark green and gold finish on the pressed tin floral design similar to the original. The metal hardware securing the oak straps was also done at that time in a dark brass/gold finish, again staying true to form of the original. With the exception of some light sanding and touch ups we have kept this matching green and gold tone thoughout since it was in excellent condition. No working lock.
